"Mayor! Townsville needs the Girls!"

Ms. Sara Bellum is a character in the Cartoon Network animated series The Powerpuff Girls. She is voiced by Jennifer Martin.

Biography[]

Sara Bellum (or simply Ms. Bellum) is the Mayor's loyal secretary and deputy. Referred to as the "Brains Behind the Man" by the Mayor himself, who believes that she is the head of Townsville. Ms. Bellum handles most of the Mayor's priorities, due to his general ineptness. She is an ally and friend to the Powerpuff Girls, often aiding them in various episodes and even hanging out with them (some even considering Ms. Bellum as the 4th Powerpuff Girl). She often speaks with an alluring and quite calm voice.

Ms. Bellum's face is rarely shown onscreen, with exceptions being in the form of a dog in "Monkey See, Doggie Do", while wearing a mask of Sedusa's face in "Something's a Ms." and in "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!" briefly revealing part of her face. Otherwise, whenever she usually appears, an object will either block her face or the camera will cut off everything above her neck. However, whenever she becomes the center of attention (such as when she and Blossom switched bodies or when she fought Sedusa), her large mass of curly hair simply covers the entirety of her face, allowing for her entire body to be visible.

In her early life, Ms. Bellum has attended elementary school with the Professor and Ms. Keane prior to the creation of the Powerpuff Girls, insinuating that they are all around the same age.

In the bleak future of the episode "Speed Demon", Ms. Bellum expresses an obsessive attachment to the Mayor's hat out of grief, insinuating that she was always in love with him, despite the fact that he is already married and is much older than her.

Ms. Bellum resides at 69 Yodelinda Valley Lane.

Appearance[]

Described as beautiful by onscreen characters (with the exception of the abrasive Talking Dog) Ms. Bellum is a tall, tan-skinned woman with a curvaceous figure, possessing long, curly orange-red hair. Before the episode "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!", her actual face was rarely shown. However, every now and then, her chin would be shown on occasion, but has been inconsistent in appearance, as it alternates from being pointed or rounded. Other onscreen characters have often claimed that she is very pretty and attractive, with the exception of the abrasive Talking Dog.

In the episode "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!", Ms. Bellum's face was finally shown for a brief second, albeit not in its entirety. Only one of her eyes was visible, as the other was covered by her hair. Her visible eye was closed at the time, with only a single eyelash coming off the side of it, making it unknown what her eye color is. She also has a rounded chin and has rounded lips with red lipstick.

Ms. Bellum's regular apparel consists of a simple black choker around her neck (originally a thin necklace), with a small, circular-shaped golden pendant. She wears a business suit consisting of a vivid-red buttoned-down blouse and a matching thigh-high pencil skirt, with her blouse exposing a bit of her cleavage and her skirt highlighting her legs. She also wears a black belt with a golden buckle, matching her choker, along with a pair of matching vivid-red, high-heeled pumps.

Occasionally, Ms. Bellum has worn different outfits depending on the situation:

Impeach Fuzz

Ms. Bellum in "Impeach Fuzz".

  • In "Impeach Fuzz", Fuzzy Lumpkins becomes the Mayor of Townsville and has Ms. Bellum dress up more provocatively for his pleasure. She is forced to don a red polka dot emblazoned, white crop top knot and a denim mini-shorts, held up by a light brown rope belt. She is barefoot and has had her hair styled in pigtails.
  • In "Something's a Ms.", Sedusa kidnaps Ms. Bellum and forces her into a disguise of herself, composing of a mask made to resemble Sedusa's face, a red leotard, long, red gloves, red thigh-high boots, red fishnet stockings and black pantyhose worn under the fishnets. Her exposed skin is also covered with white makeup to match Sedusa's pale skin. When Ms. Bellum rips the mask off, her curly hair bursts out intact. After her and Sedusa fight in the pool, the makeup washes off her skin, revealing her normal tan skin.
  • In "Criss Cross Crisis", Blossom switches bodies with Ms. Bellum, waking up in Ms. Bellum's sleep attire, consisting of a red nightgown robe and slippers with purple highlights and a "B" imprinted on the chest. Ms. Bellum's hair is also messy. She later changes into an adult-sized version of Blossom's normal dress; a short, tight pink dress with a black belt, white tights and black shoes. Blossom also styles Ms. Bellum's hair differently to match her own, minus the bow.
  • In "Octi Gone", Ms. Bellum wore a purple dress with an open side slit high up to her hip, for the Professor's dinner party.

Personality[]

Ms. Bellum has a very calm and understanding personality, which makes her a very good role model and good source of advice for the Powerpuff Girls. While she remains calm at most times, she still tends to panic when a situation escalates and she especially shows anger towards the Mayor when he acts idiotic. Despite how moronic the Mayor is, she always remains loyal to him. She has also been shown to be witty, sassy and sarcastic at times, such as in Equal Fights, where she sarcastically told Blossom that the Mayor should "use his own superpowers to save the day" when she asked why the Mayor can't save the city on his own. She shows this dry wit towards the Mayor as well constantly due to his moronic nature with his job.

In her personal life, Ms. Bellum is not married and single, like the Professor and Ms. Keane. Unlike them, she has not expressed implicit interest in dating anyone and never shown to be in a relationship, prioritizing her career instead.

When not at the Mayor's office, she rarely socializes with anyone outside of work (save for special events such as the girls' birthday party in Birthday Bash and the Professor's dinner party in Octi Gone). This implies she has a reclusive nature. further proven by her house being outside of the center of Townsville. Because of this, Sedusa was able to take advantage of Ms. Bellum's reclusive nature in Something's a Ms. by tying Ms. Bellum up in her home, disguising herself as Ms. Bellum for a time, and later forcing Ms. Bellum into a disguise of Sedusa. No one had noticed until the Mayor was sent a message deliberately for Ms. Bellum's ransom by Sedusa.

Abilities[]

While she does not possess any superpowered abilities, Ms. Bellum is very intelligent and most likely has the most common sense out of anyone in Townsville. She is usually becomes the voice of reason for the Powerpuff Girls, occasionally solving problems neither the girls, the Professor, the Mayor or anyone else involved can solve. Her intelligence is often seen throughout the series, such as her advice helping the girls out in "The Rowdyruff Boys" and "Equal Fights", ultimately saving the day in each.

In the episode "Something's a Ms.", Ms. Bellum is shown to actually be a capable fighter, holding her own in her home against Sedusa, who does possess superpowers. Despite taking various attacks powerful enough against a Powerpuff Girl, Ms. Bellum somehow still recovers from each hit, showing her great resistance to pain. She is able to turn the tide of the fight by unleashing a powerful spear tackle on Sedusa, sending the two women through a window and into the pool.

Despite taking even more punches underwater, Ms. Bellum is able to hold her breath longer than Sedusa and manages to find an opening. She knocks Sedusa out cold underwater for a brief moment and swims out victorious.

Weaknesses[]

Ms. Bellum grabbed by Sedusa's hair whips, lifted in the air, and lashed in the face.

As mentioned before, Ms. Bellum has no super abilities and is just as prone to the many dangers seen on the show as the rest of the citizens of Townsville.

In "Powerpuff Bluff" and "Something's a Ms.", Ms. Bellum was shown being tied to a chair, and in the latter's case was only able to free herself with the help of Blossom loosening the ropes on her.

In "Tough Love", Ms. Bellum was possessed by HIM and forced to fight the Powerpuff Girls. She is, however, knocked out instantly by Bubbles punching the Mayor into her stomach, launching them both away and later showing her unconscious body among the other Townsville citizens.

"Something's a Ms." is the episode where Ms. Bellum's weakness in combat is the most prevalent. As she opens the fight by leaving herself open, she gets easily grabbed by Sedusa's hair, getting squeezed around the waist so tight, she is unable to move. Sedusa then lifts her entire body upwards in front of the girls. While holding the secretary helplessly in the air, Sedusa lashes Ms. Bellum in the face by a hair whip. While the lashing isn't shown, the girls' reactions imply it was a painful blow. Sedusa then violently slams the secretary to the ground.

While Ms. Bellum has a brief opening, she is immediately punished by Sedusa via a kick to the stomach. This alone sends Ms. Bellum flying into across the room into a staircase, knocking the secretary out briefly. While Ms. Bellum is motionless, Sedusa quickly grabs her by the hair and throws her around like a ragdoll in her own home into various objects and breaking them. All heavy hits that leave Ms. Bellum with no retaliation from her in between until she lands onto the window.

In the pool, Ms. Bellum attempts to swim out, but is immediately dragged back down by Sedusa and takes several more blows. This causes her to become very fatigued after the fight from the loss of air and the beating she took in the fight overall, and only won in the end by learning of Sedusa's weakness and using it to free the Powerpuff Girls.

In a later episode "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!", Sedusa grabs Ms. Bellum and the Mayor by the legs with her hair whips holding them both upside down. The encounter was interrupted by Powerpuff Girls.

Trivia[]

  • Ms. Bellum's name is a pun on "cerebellum", the part of the brain that controls motor control such as attention, language, and emotion. It works on many levels since she is usually the "logical" thinker in most situations and that she is the one who tells the mayor what he should do since he "lacks" said motor skills.

    • Alternatively, her name also could allude to "para bellum", which is part of the infamous military proverb "Si vis pacem, para bellum" (literal Latin for "if you want peace, prepare for war").
  • Ms. Bellum appears in the Cartoon Network show Chowder episode "The Hot Date" at the ending.
  • Some scenes in The Powerpuff Girls with Ms. Bellum have animation errors of her neck being too long at times.
  • Ms. Bellum's home address is 69 Yodelinda Valley Ln.
  • The episode "Insect Inside" reveals her first name to be Sara.
  • Ms. Bellum's house has been shown twice where it is first shown in "Something's a Ms." and again in "Criss Cross Crisis".
  • Ms. Sara Bellum's character is very similar to Mac's mother from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
    • Both are designed to not have their faces shown (although there could be brief moments).
  • In "Abracadaver", there is a woman who sounds like Ms. Bellum.
  • Ms. Bellum and Ms. Keane are the only main characters who didn't appear in See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey.

Ms. Bellum in her brief appearance in the 2016 series.

  • Ms. Bellum was removed from the 2016 reboot by having her leave due to accumulating too many vacation hours and wanting to exploit them. Executive producer Nick Jennings reasoned that the staff "felt like Ms. Bellum wasn't quite indicative of the kind of messaging [they] wanted to be giving out at this time". The crew thought she was offensive.
    • Many viewers were upset at this change, believing that the removal was an attempt at maximizing the show's kid-friendliness that ignored Bellum's perceived strengths.
  • Judging by Ms. Bellum's hair colour, texture, facial features and skin colour, it's possible she could be of Irish and Italian descent.
  • The reason why Ms. Bellum is a recluse has never been explained, though it's possible she tried fitting in, but was never accepted by others due to her intelligent nature (in other words, she was rejected by those around her for being different).
